Chapter 11

Another empty day at school. Still no Troy and what was worse no Craig to pump for information. Not that Rachel blamed him if what Jacki said about seniors’ grades was true. She would have stayed home except she didn’t want to spend any more time with her mom and grandma than she had to. She couldn’t stand any more lies. Just thinking about them made her head throb and her stomach nauseous. She rubbed her temples until they burned.

“You know, Rachel, I don’t know why you just don’t tell him where to get off. This is the third day in a row you’ve moped around. He’s not worth it. It’s one thing not to come by school, but he didn’t show up at the meet. He doesn’t come by to pick you up after practice. He doesn’t even call you.” Rachel didn’t need Jacki’s list of reasons to believe he’d dumped her.

“I know.” Rachel poked at her macaroni and cheese.

“I see you’re still wearing the charm he gave you.”

“I can’t give it back until I see him. He won’t be back until Monday.”

“So? I guess that means you have to wear it ‘til then in case he shows up before then.”

Rachel had seen that smug look on Jacki before. “That’s right. As soon as he does, I’ll throw it in his face.”

“I can’t wait to see that. I’m sure he’ll wait until you work it off your bracelet. That should only take, say, 5 or 10 minutes. Or do you plan to throw your whole bracelet at him? That’d be so much better. Who are you kidding? You still like the guy. You plan on letting him talk his way out of this, don’t you?”

The flush of heat went straight to Rachel’s face. “No.” She put down her fork and unlatched her bracelet. After she worked unsuccessfully to detach the moonstone charm, she offered it to Jacki. “Here. You try. If you get it off, I’ll find a way to give it back to him.”

Jacki grabbed the bracelet. After rummaging through her notebook, she finally came up with her nail clippers and pulled out its metal file. “Better than a Swiss army knife.” She pried the link open and handed Rachel the charm. “What’s your next excuse?”

“Thanks,” Rachel replied, replaced the bracelet on her arm and slipped the charm into a pocket. “How can I give it back to him if he doesn’t show up at school?”

“Easy. Take it to his house.”

“How do I do that? I ride the bus in the mornings, and mom picks me up after practice. I’m sure not doing it in front of her.”

“I’ll take you. I’ll go over to your house after supper and pick you up. We’ll drive over to his house. You knock on his door. When he answers, you hand it over and walk off. As I always say, better to dump than be dumped.”

“When did you ever say that?”

“I would if it were me. Don’t you want to give it back before he asks for it?”

“I guess.
